All Solar Is Not Created Equal

Types of California Solar Panels

The efficiency of California solar panels depend on the type of solar panels you install. The three types of solar panels are shown below in order of efficiency:

Monocrystalline Solar Panel

Monocrystalline Solar Panels

Monocrystalline modules are the most efficient solar panels because the silicon cells are made from a single large crystal, cut from ingots. These solar panels are the best option when trying to maximize space availability. Monocrystalline photovoltaic modules are the most common module utilized on single family home, apartment building and small commercial installations.

Polycrystalline Solar Panel

Polycrystalline Solar Panels

Polycrystalline modules are less efficient solar panels than monocrystalline solar panels, but effective depending on the amount of space available. Polycrystalline solar panels differ from monocrystalline solar panels in that they are made from cast blocks of silicon which contain many small crystals. Polycrystalline solar panels are often utilized on residential ground mount installations, residential rooftop installations where there is an abundance of south or western facing roof space , commercial/industrial projects and can be used for solar farm ground mount installations.

Thin Film Solar Panel

Thin Film Solar Panels

Thin Film (aka: amorphous) solar panels are the least efficient type of solar panels. These solar panels are made by spreading silicon directly on large plates, typically stainless steel. They are cheaper to produce, but much less efficient, which means it takes more thin film solar panels to generate the same power as fewer mono or poly panels. These solar panels are good for locations where space is not of concern. The most common application for this technology is large industrial and commercial rooftop installations or for ground mount solar farms.
